In a job interview recently I was asked what the worst parts of me are. I couldn’t really answer it although thinking about it. I should have just said…

If I wasn’t so, addictive, aggressive, defensive, irrational, ignorant, stubborn a person. I wouldn’t be who I am now.

If I’m honest.. which i quite like to believe i am.. I feel very blessed to be in this current position.. Second year at Ravensbourne, design for moving image.. it probably sounds arrogant to state the position im in.. although i feel more blessed and humbled by the people that i am meeting along this journey.. I have made contact with individuals from around 5 or 6 agencies tonight and it’s inspiring to see and begin to understand just how much opportunity and diversity there is within this region of work.. I’ve probably not made an incredibly exciting impression on those people although they have been great to meet.. I will work on my sales patter.. I think it’s a matter of being a bit overwhelmed by the experience and a lack of knowledge in how to interact with working professionals.. My dad put it like this.. “Everybody has to wipe their own ass”.. A good point I guess.. It’s a great learning curve to have though, interacting with important people.. potential clients.. employers..

Anyway i thought that it would be a good time to write in my blog.. perhaps a bit overwhelmed, a bit tipsy, never the less.. certainly blessed to be in this position..

Why do we always say thank you when people say something you have bought looks nice? It’s not as if I designed my new coat or the iPhone but people tend to tell you things look nice, (Unless your a goat).

Does the label of student make a life within design harder? What’s the difference between being a student and a professional? I consider myself to be good at what I do… or perhaps best described as going through an experimental patch… I’m sure the day will come when I can tell people I’m a professional designer, earning money from the work I produce. Perhaps it’s the financial struggle or just how things go. I understand that i have more to prove to clients because I don’t have a glamorous website, or a c.v. full of inspiring brands, that i have worked for. Is it really a matter of paying my dues? or finding my big break.

I think what I’m trying to say is that it’s going to be hard to spend the next three or four months with little income hopefully on an internship of some sorts. Of course I could continue my day job working within security, although that has a short life span and provides very little satisfaction. So do i follow my dreams and be broke, or work a job I cant stand to be able to afford those one of nights at fabric.

Surely if councils keep closing libraries publishers will just get shut off by the kindle. Not...

Surely if councils keep closing libraries publishers will just get shut off by the kindle. Not everyone has a computer but everyone has access to a 3g network provided for free via amazon. Everyone can find somewhere to sit and read also.

Although I’m posting this and have a kindle, I am currently really enjoying having a psychical copy of Adrian Shaugnessy’s “how to be a graphic designer without loosing your soul”.

The big society is going to fail! Illegal raves will rise! Music will thrive!
